SUMMARY:Monthly Talk: Charlemagne—Warrior and Architect of Europe
DESCRIPTION:A formidable warrior and devout Christian king\, Charlemagne expanded his empire\, relentlessly fighting to unite lands and eradicate paganism. Crowned the first Holy Roman Emperor in 801\, his reign brought stability\, earning him the title “Father of Europe”. \nDespite being illiterate\, he fostered a cultural and intellectual revival—the Carolingian Renaissance—establishing a renowned court\, promoting education\, and overseeing the creation of historical works and manuscripts. His legacy endures\, inspiring myths and admiration for centuries. \nThis talk will be presented by Eleanor Levy\, who earned a history degree from UCL after studying at The Open University. She spent 20 years at Regent’s College working with American undergraduates on their semester abroad program. Now an active member of HGS u3a\, she runs three groups from home\, combining presentations\, tutorials\, and field trips. Passionate about adult education\, she finds it both rewarding and stimulating\, appreciating the fresh perspectives participants bring to each session. \nDoors open at 2.30 pm for refreshments and socialising.
